| I was reading an article somewhere that basically said as much, and I would have to agree that the UFC LHW belt has to be the most coveted, king of all titles in the world of mixed martial arts.
Obviously whoever holds a UFC belt in any weight class is the "real" champion of that weight class in the world without question, but it seems like ever since the days of Chuck Liddell that the LHW title is the "king of kings" for a lot of different reasons like level of competion, star power, etc. In recent memory, I can only think of a few instances that could compare to the mystique and top-end drawing power of the UFC LHW division. Late Hughes/early GSP-era WW division comes to mind, as does Fedor/CroCop/Big Nog-era Pride HW division, but from around 2006 or 2007 up until now, I think the UFC LHW championship is the premiere title.
Thoughts? | |

| LW has been pretty stacked, but I would agree for a long time LHW has been the belt to have. That being said I dont think anything will ever compare to HW during the Pride days imo. | |

| I remember it always sort of being the rockstar division from all the way back to the Lidell reign. So i'd sort of agree. | |

Yeah, the UFC lightweight division is on the rise right now too, I think. I could see LW being the rockstar division in the next few years.

| I think it's all really dependent on the current champ of whatever division. Charisma paired with total domination of the division are the two biggest factors in picking out which division rules. For a while LHW was it and perhaps still is. The division itself is not the attraction, the champion and the top 10 in each division determine which division has the "title of titles".
Right now yes the LHW division has the "title of titles". Perhaps thats one of the problems the UFC is facing. They need more "title of titles" or "champion of champions".
Question: What happens to this "title of titles" concept if Jones moves up a weight class and starts to dominate there?

Pretty much sums up what I was thinking when I posed the question. It's not really about the division as a whole; that's not what puts the asses in the seats. It's about the top level- the competition at the top of the division and how they match up and interact. That's what has made the LHW division so great over the last 8 years or so.

| I agree that it has always been the most consistant coveted belt from history to now. Best weight class ballance of power and not being too fat to tire out after 2 rounds. | |
