Weidman injured, out of UFC 173 title fight with Machida

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is out of his scheduled UFC 173 title fight against Lyoto Machida due to injury. UFC officials made the announcement on Monday.
 
“Weidman suffered a knee injury that will require minor surgery and his bout with Machida has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 5. A new main event for UFC 173 on May 24 will be announced in the days to come,” read a statement released by the organization.
Weidman was originally scheduled to face Vitor Befort in the UFC 173 main event, but on Feb. 27 the Nevada State Athletic Commission banned the use of testosterone replacement therapy. Belfort, who was on TRT, backed out of the fight.
 
“Given the time constraints involved between now and my proposed next bout in May, I have determined not to apply for a license to fight in Nevada at this time,” stated Belfort at the time. Machida replaced Belfort.
 
UFC 173 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Weidman vs. Machida will now take place at UFC 175 on July 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

OK, let me go ahead and open this inevitable can of worms;

Since the date is moved out an additional month-and-a-half, will Vitor be ready to go by then? Should he be given the shot instead of Lyoto if he is ready? What if the UFC again offered it to Vitor and he said no? Would that be a big ol' red flag?

I was thinking the same thing, but I am still doubting Vitor will try it.

I'd prefer to see Vitor get the fight, but honestly that wouldn't be fair to Machida. He was offered the fight and accepted. It's not his fault Weidman got injured.
If Dana was smart though, he's have Vitor in queue and ready in the event Machida gets injured.
Honestly, I don't know why the UFC doesn't do this more often.

I'd rather see Vitor too...for obvious Machida hater reasons.

Agreed. I like either match-up, as well as whatever the future match-up may end up being (Weidman vs Vitor or Machida vs Vitor).

I like what stock said, Let Machida keep the fight and keep vitor in the wing incase of injury. Heck even if it was Weidman who got injured again I wouldn't mind seeing a Machida/ vitor fight either.

Even though I'd rather see the Vitor matchup, I do agree that it should rightfully go to Machida, so I wouldn't have a problem still seeing that. Either way I'm pulling for a Weidman victory.

I just read that Weidman is actually having surgery on both knees. He's had two mildly torn miniscuses for a long time now, but has had issues lately with one of them flaring up. So while he's in there, he figured he'd just get the other one fixed, too.

I don't know about that. I mean I don't blame him for wanting to get them both fixed up, but this means he won't be able to walk on either leg for the recovery period, which means more time on the couch, which means getting more out of shape, which means longer comeback time in the training room, which means being able to defend a world title in 3 months suddenly doesnt sound all that sure of a thing.

I'm a little uneasy about this, to be honest.

hahaha I just watched howard the duck 2 weeks ago. my GF bought it for me as a gag gift to bad the jokes on her cause I actually love the movie. but then again I loved frogs and killer klowns from outerspace so take my stance with a grain of salt.
