For the second time in as many events, Strikeforce has canceled another show. Just 19 days after nixing their September 29th card, injuries have once again forced the UFC’s little brother to erase their November 3rd event from its agenda.
However, for those who think this is the beginning of the end for
Strikeforce, the struggling mixed martial arts promotion announced they
intend to regroup and host a “stacked card” in January. Details for that
bash are still being determined.
“Due to a series of injuries, we were forced to cancel the upcoming
card on Nov. 3, but are already working to put together a stacked card
in January,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said.
Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champ Daniel Cormier (Pictrued)
was slated to headline the festivities opposite Frank Mir. However, Mir was forced to bow out with a wound and it appears the promotion was unable to locate a suitable substitute in time.
The injury bug took another bite out of the roster when middleweight champ Luke Rockhold had to withdraw from the co-main event against Lorenz Larkin with an injured wrist.
“While we’re disappointed with the cancellation,
we
are looking forward to an even bigger Strikeforce event on Showtime
early next year,” added Showtime Sports executive vice president Stephen
Espinoza.
Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma was to serve as host. Ticket refunds will be available at point of sale.
Cormier has been anxiously waiting to wrap up his Strikeforce career so he can transition to the UFC.
