‘Ref Cam’ Debuts at UFC on Fox 4

Saturday’s UFC on Fox 4 event will feature some new technology.

According to a press release from Fox Sports, “Ref Cam” will debut during this weekend’s broadcast. The camera, which will be positioned at the top button of the referee’s shirt during the fights, will give viewers an up close look at the action. The camera is powered by a lithium ion battery with a transmitter that is under the referee’s vest.

This will be a first for the UFC, but PRIDE Fighting Championships used similar technology in the past. Fox Sports employs similar technology during its other sports broadcasts, including its coverage of Major League Baseball. The “Ref Cam” is designed by Inertia Unlimited and has already been featured on HBO Boxing earlier this year.

I think this will be awesome for replays and for specific situations where there is not a good angle with other cameras.

However, since Fox is normally horrible at sports, I fear they will try to over use it and will end up getting motion sickness watching the fights.

Agree with stock. I think ref cam will probably be at it's best during HL videos.

Damn this didn't work out so well I must have blinked when they put the shot up. Dana doesn't like the idea at all .... and what Dana doesn't like ... I fear won't last long no matter what he says.

Me I would have liked to see more of the ref cam to make an informed decision.

Yeah me neither. I remember watching for it the whole time as was convinced Fox would over use it. Sounds like they actually didn't use it enough.

I think the ref cam is a good idea. Plus some times we do get on the ref for making a bad call or lack there of making the right call. The ref cam can atleast give us a better idea what he saw vs. what the camera men picked up.I lost countless times when refs say i wish the judges saw what i saw cause they gave the fight to the wrong guy. This could help out who knows? One thing i can say i dont see how it could hurt to have it.
