Fantasy Idea!

OK, so things have been pretty slow around here lately, so trying to think of something to stir the pot.
Looking for about 5 guys who would like to participate in a fantasy league to run 1 full year.
High Level Details:
1. Each person drafts a team of ~10 fighters.
2. Will track fighters using a point system and their records against other teams in the league over the course of a year.
3. Standings updated by me after every applicable fight card.

This would require no time other than the initial draft. I will take care of all the standings etc...

Couple thoughts:
1. Free to sign up. Maybe a mod could offer some hefty standard cash to 1st and 2nd place. Or maybe I can come up with some stupid donated prize or something.
2. I know we are all too busy to participate in a LIVE draft. I would suggest everyone would send me a proxy list, and I can draft on your behalf.

Many more specific details (I've done this before), but at this time please respond in this thread if you would be interested and if you would have time to provide me a proxy list of fighters by Friday (So I can have time to set everyone's teams in time for this weekend's fights).

I think this is an awesome idea, and cheers to you for taking the time to hash this out.

Great, this makes 3 of us so far. Hope we can get a few more.
Here are the extended (anal) rules in case you guys are looking for some shitter reading material.

Draft Rules:
1. Each team will draft a team of 10 fighters (subject to change based on number of participants).
2. You must have at least one fighter from each of the top 5 weight classes, and at least 2 fighters from the 145 or lower weight classes (as of today). Your remaining draft picks can be in any weight class.
3. Draft order will be in the order I receive your Proxy Lists (I will draft 3rd).
4. This will be a snake draft, meaning the person who picks last in the first round will pick first in the second round (and so on).
5. When drafting, I will pick the highest fighter still available on your list, unless it comes down to you still needing to fill a gap in a weight class.
6. When filling out your proxy list, I suggest listing at least 50 fighters. If your list is too short and you have nobody left on your list, I will default to the next highest ranked athlete available from the sites "top 10 rankings" (starting with HW). You also have the option to list fighters you definitely do not want along with your proxy list in case your list is too short.

How do I win?
Two Ways. A prize will be given to the winner of each category (Say 5000 standard cash... but will let a mod decide).

1. League Standings
a. Your winning percentage against the rest of the league. (only fights against other league fighters are counted for this category)
b. Ties broken in the following order: Head-to-Head winning percentage, 2) Most Matches, 3) Most Finishes, Most Points.

2. Most Points
a. Each team will be ranked by total points based on the following scoring.
b. Win = 2 Points
c. Loss = -1 Point
d. Draw/No Contest = 0 Points
e. A Finish (TKO/Sub) = 1 bonus point
f. A win against another fighter in the league = 1 bonus point
g. Tie Breakers in the following order: 1) Points in Head-to-Head Matches, 2) Most Wins, 3) Highest League winning percentage.

Why two ways to win?
Since this over the course of a year, there is a chance a member gets stuck with a team with several inactive fighters due to suspensions, retirement, injury, etc... Winning Percentage is blind to number of fights, so will still give guys a chance to win even with low activity.

Can I cut a guy who sucks?
Yes. Each team is allowed 2 trades (first come first serve by private message) they can use at any time during the season. Season will end exactly 1 year from this Saturday or a one week lapse without a fight from team member (whatever comes second).
You may trade with a free agent fighter (any fighter not currently on a team), or with another team member.
You will be penalized 1 point for letting a fighter go (so make it worth it).

Are there some strategies to drafting?
1. I would stick with guys you think will get a lot of activity, as you will have more chances to score points. You may be treading on thin ice to draft a guy who may retire soon.
2. There IS an incentive to draft guys who finish fights more often, however inactivity will hurt you more than a guy who doesn't finish fights.
3. Likely better off to draft guys who will be fighting other guys in our league. Although, any fighter with a Sherdog profile is eligible to be drafted, if you pick some guy in some remote fight league you likely will not get any bonus points for beating a guy on someone else's team.

What happens when fight outcomes are overruled?
Sherdog fight statistics within 24 hours of the fight will hold. (ie.. if a fight gets ruled a NC when a fighters drug test results come back a week later, points will not be adjusted). 24 hours grace will be given in the event of erroneous score cards, etc..

What happens if one of my fighters changes weight classes during the season.
1. It doesn't matter. You only need to have the specified number of athletes in each weight class for drafting purposes.
2. The only caveat is that you may not empty a required weight class by cutting a fighter, unless you plan on replacing him accordingly.



I think I covered everything. If you can think of any nuances before you submit your proxy list, please let me know beforehand. Afterwards, I will have to make the final decision.

OK guys, will try to answer some questions.

Krieger, you can draft anybody with sherdog profile. However, a guy without any pro MMA fights (defined by a record kept on sherdog's fighter profile) isn't going to do you much good.

You can send me your proxy list anytime before the end of the day on Friday (I need time to get everyone their teams before Saturday night's fights). The earlier you get me your list, the earlier you get to pick in the draft.

For those of you who don't know how a proxy draft works.....
Each of you send me a list of your top 50 or so fighters you want drafted. When you are up, I will draft on your behalf the best available from your list. If your list of proxy fighters is not long enough, I will automatically draft highest available fighter from our site's top 10 rankings starting with HW working down. Because of this you also have the option to list some fighters you definitely DON'T want me to draft for you.
You must draft at least one fighter from HW, LHW, MW, WW, & LW classes. You must have at least 2 fighters total from Feather, Bantam, or Fly classes.

The draft will "snake" meaning the draft order reverses every round (guy with the last pick in the first round will get 2 picks in a row as they will draft first in the second round).


I am going to cap the number of members at 7 total (first come first serve).

BTW... if you are looking for a good starting point for top fighters, I would definitely start with this site's top 10 rankings by weight class.
Additionally, www.fightmatrix.com is a great spot to find ranked fighters by weight class as I think they go top 50 or so for each weight class.

To answer some PM's I've gotten about how much time will need to be invested in this fantasy league.

After you submit your proxy list of fighters to me, essentially NO time will be required by you. This is not like fantasy baseball or football where you have to spend time setting your roster every week.
Your drafted team is your team for the entire year.

As outlined in the rules, you do have 2 trades (either with another team member or free agent) you can use any time during the year. However, this is all done at your own time, and there are no deadlines. Trades will just be honred on a first come first serve basis.

So does this mean that it would be wise to fill the required weight-class criteria right away on our lists (the first 7 picks)? Or are you basicly just referring to the very end of the draft?

It's really up to how you want to order your fighters. If you put a lot of heavyweights at the top, it's possible your first few picks may all be heavyweights. Then the most you could have in any other weight class would be one.

My main concern was the possibilty of default list fighters (not my own listed fighters) being assigned to my team due to the fact that I didn't fill my weight class criteria ealry enough in my proxy list. But thinking about it now, that won't be a problem as long as I make my list big enough.
