Carwin Injured, Out Until 2012

Oct 16, 2011 - One time UFC heavyweight title challenger Shane Carwin has announced on his blog that he's going to undergo back surgery and will not be able to fight again until 2012.

Carwin announced the news on his own web site.

"As I ramped up my training for UFC 141 my body locked up during training. It wasn't like the Lesnar fight but my back just tightened up and I froze. I scheduled an MRI and the results showed that my disc in my lower back is into the nerves . My doctor gave me two options; retire and I could probably go on for a few years without surgery or I could undergo surgery and continue my career.

"The decision was easy. I have unfinished business. The UFC had me lined up to face one of the best in the world and I am confident I have everything I need to be a Champion. I am scheduling surgery and I hope to return to the Octagon by spring or summer 2012," Carwin posted.

Carwin's UFC 141 fight hadn't been announced by the promotion, but it's likely he was slated to welcome one of the top Strikeforce heavyweights to the promotion.

Carwin is 36 years old and will be 37 before he is able to recuperate from surgery and return to action. He underwent neck surgery in November, 2010. His last UFC bout was a loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 131.

Damn that sucks, I thought he just came off back surgery not too long ago. Hmmm he is getting up there in age, hopefully he can recover but I doubt it.

Exactly what I was thinking,
back surgery is not a minor thing, plus the older you are
the harder it is to recover from a major surgery like that.

I am a big Carwin fan, but don't know if he will ever be as
relevant in the HW division as he once was. It easy to see
he is a hard worker and very likable fighter; but I am really
not sure if that will be enough for him.

That all being said, I hope he gets the surgery done, and takes
the necessary time for it to heal right so he can get back in the
gym and back on track. I would love to see him fight someone
like Big Foot, Big Nog, Werdum or even Frank Mir again.

Chronic back problems are NOT good, especially for a big guy like Carwin, thats not good news. Hope he can come back and stay healthy.

Bulging disks usually require removal and a prosthetic put in (Bonner). Its not just the physical recovery but the psychological recovery as well. A heavyweight with a new artificial disk is not going to go with the same vigor that he did pre-injury.

Sad to say but I believe Carwin will not be coming back from this.

That does suck, always liked carwin. hoppefully he will come back stronger and better.
