The biggest superfight in women’s mixed martial arts history is finally going down! Freshly-crowned UFC bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey will defend her belt against Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (Pictured) at UFC 157 – this according to UFC Brazil’s website (but for only the briefest of moments).
Sorry, fight fans. Someone in jiu jitsu country jumped the gun. UFC officials have confirmed the headline was a typo and the title has since been removed.
However, was this a Freudian slip that will come to fruition? There are several factors that make it work, including the fact the Anaheim card has yet to assign a leading act, Cyborg will be two months removed from her year-long drug suspension and both ladies train in Southern Cali.
Furthermore, Rousey is WMMA’s largest rock star. Where better to throw her coming out party than in Hollywood – well, more like 30 minutes south of Hollywood without traffic – but you get the point.
Wait up. What about Cyborg’s doctor claiming just last month that it wouldn’t be healthy for his patient to cut 10 pounds and drop to the bantamweight division?
Well, it appears the former Strikeforce featherweight champion believes she can do it. Although, Cyborg states there isn’t enough time to shed the excess pounds for the February 23rd appointment.
“I’m organizing, but it is a lengthy process, it is a lot of weight,” Cyborg told Tatame.com (via Google Translate). “I’m willing to do that to fight with her, but not in two months.
