Anderson Silva Vs. Stephan Bonnar At 205 To Headline UFC 153, Maldonado vs. Teixeira To Co-Main Event

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva offered to fill in at the last minute at UFC 151, but it was too late. This time, he got the call. Silva will meet Ultimate Fighter 1 Finalist Stephan Bonnar in the main event of UFC 153 at light heavyweight. MMA Junkie/USA Today have the news:

USA TODAY Sports has confirmed with company officials that UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (32-4, 15-0) is moving up to 205 pounds to meet Bonnar in the main event of UFC 153 event, which takes place Oct. 13 at Rio de Janeiro's HSBC Arena.

Silva (32-4) has competed at light heavyweight twice in the UFC, defeating James Irvin and Forrest Griffin by first-round TKO. He's coming off a second-round TKO win over Chael Sonnen at UFC 148. Bonnar (14-7) has won eight of his fourteen fights in the UFC and is currently on a three fight winning streak. He hasn't competed since taking a decision over Kyle Kingsbury last November.

In addition, the co-main event is set as well. Glover Teixeira (16-2) will face off with fellow Brazilian Fabio Maldonado (18-5).

Ehhh....that's pretty lame. Of course Silva is a great headliner, but Stuffin Boner? Come on, really?
They couldn't get a better opponent than him? Oh well, at least he agreed to fight Silva. I'm curious how many people turned it down before Dana settled on Bonnar.

Also, MMAWeekly is reporting that Big Nog is fighting Dave Herman on this card, which is slightly less blah, so the new main card now looks like this:

-Anderson Silva vs. Stephan Bonnar
-Glover Teixeira vs. Fabio Maldonado
-Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Dave Herman
-Erick Silva vs. Jon Fitch
-Phil Davis vs. Wagner Prado

-Frankie Edgar vs. TBA (if Edgar remains on the card???)

So word is Frankie Edgar is now off the card altogether. Probably for the best as far as his FW career is concerned.

And let's not forget that while Bonner will likely be violently assaulted, he really has nothing to lose. If anyone is taking a risk here, It's Silva.
He didn't have to offer to take this fight, but main-eventing in Brazil was probably just too sweet to pass on. He is expected to dominate, and needs to do so.

Can you imagine the shit storm it will be if Bonnar some how pulls this one off....

Well good for Bonnar you got a fight against one of the best of all time like you wanted. Most of those fights actually interest me, but it does kind of suck that Aldo got injured, man that guy seems injury prone.

I dont think bonnar is a bad pick at all. he's a hell of a good kickboxer and has a pretty solid chin and will definitly trade with silva. Plus with no title on the line i dont see any problem. I bet bonnar does better than griffen did against silva at 205.

I think, at the very least it will be a lot of fun to watch, which is really all you can ask for out of a late replacement fight. Yeah, it sucks that the other fights got scrapped, because the original line-up was clearly better. But for pure entertainment value, I do like this fight (and card) a lot, and will definitely be buying it.

If Bonnar wins.... somehow then it'll be a bigger upset than GSP-Serra 1.
