| - Quote :
- Shark Fights presents its 17th event on Friday July 15 from the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas. The main event will be a rematch between UFC veterans Matt Horwich and Jake Rosholt. The middleweights met last November at Xtreme Fight Night in Tulsa, Oklahoma with Horwich earning a third round TKO victory. The card also features former UFC Heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez who takes on Minnesota native Karl Knothe while MFC veteran Emanuel Newton battles Ilir Latifi. The main card will be telecast live on HDNet beginning at 10:00PM eastern time.
Here’s a breakdown of the main card with predictions on the winners.
MAIN CARD
•Matt “Suave” Horwich (26-18-1) vs. Jake Rosholt (11-3): Horwich is an enigmatic jiu-jitsu black belt who has endured his share of ups and downs during his 45 fight career. Horwich dropped a unanimous decision to Danillo Villefort at Shark Fights 14 in March. Horwich owns 20 of his 26 career wins via submission. Rosholt is an All-American wrestler coming in on a five fight unbeaten streak with four wins and a no contest. In his last bout Rosholt was dominating John Ott before an inadvertent illegal knee from Rosholt ended the fight and was originally ruled a disqualification before being changed to a no contest. Rosholt has finished all eleven of his wins with five TKOs and six submissions. Like the first bout, this one is likely to see the final round but this time going to a decision. Rosholt will own a slight striking advantage despite the TKO loss to Horwich and should be able to neutralize the grappling expertise of Horwich. The call here is that the bout is controlled by Rosholt but Horwich surviving the attack and Rosholt evening the score with a unanimous decision victory.
Rosholt over Horwich by unanimous decision.
•Karl Knothe (19-6) vs. Ricco Rodriguez (46-11): Knothe is an eight year veteran of the local circuit and currently rides a 12 fight winning streak dating back to 2007. All 12 of those wins have come via TKO or submission and overall Knothe owns 11 submissions and six TKOs including a first round stoppage of Victor Valimaki in December. Rodriguez continues his comeback trail and currently owns an eleven fight win streak of his own with the most recent being a unanimous decision over UFC veteran James McSweeney in February. The former UFC champion owns 12 TKOs and 23 submissions in a career that began back in 1999. Rodriguez has been slowly working his way back up the MMA ladder and a victory on National TV could earn him another shot at the big time. It will also be an opportunity for Knothe to pick up a signature win over a big name opponent. The thought here is that the experience of Rodriguez will give him the edge he needs to pick up his 47th career win. It may get sloppy near the end but Rodriguez earns the unanimous decision win.
Rodriguez over Knothe by unanimous decision.
•Ilir Latifi (4-1) vs. Emanuel Newton (14-6-1): Latifi is a K-1 veteran with a pair of submissions and a two TKOS in his four career wins. Latifi was victorious via head kick TKO over Matteo Minonzio in April. Newton is the former MFC Light Heavyweight champion with five of his 14 career wins coming via submission. In his most recent bout at MFC 28 in February, Newton earned a rear naked choke submission of UFC veteran Rodney Wallace. Latifi will come to fight but this fight is Newton’s to lose. The well rounded experience of Newton will be too much for Latifi as Newton earns a TKO via ground and pound in the middle round.
Newton over Latifi by TKO (ground strikes) in round two.
•Douglas Frey (9-6) vs. Erik Perez (7-5): Frey will be fighting in his home state as he tries to get back on the winning track. Frey has dropped two straight and three of four including a unanimous decision loss to Justin Hickey in June. Perez is also a Texas native and owns a two fight winning streak including a rear naked choke submission of Jesse Thorton in April. Perez has finished all seven of his wins including five submissions and should have the grappling game to control Frey and earn a third straight submission win via rear naked choke.
Perez over Frey by rear naked choke submission in round one.
