| - Quote :
- Despite being made quick work of during his MMA debut against UFC legend Randy Couture
in August 2010, famed boxing champ James Toney isn't giving up on the sport. In fact, at 42 years young, the current IBA Heavyweight champion is gearing up for his second try in the squared circle, when he takes on MMA legend Ken Shamrock later this year.
However, it won't be with any previously establishing fighting promotions, Toney is taking matters into his own hands ... and will be launching his own fighting promotion, with some slightly different rules. While current MMA rules will be the foundation, there will be a limit to how long action can stay on the ground, which he and his partners hopes give boxers a chance ... and make for a more fast-paced event.
In June, Toney and Shamrock held a press conference at the boxer's San Fernando Valley gym, the IFC Center, where they traded insults and nearly got into a brawl before news of their upcoming match even surfaced.
We recently sat down with Toney, recently, to speak about the upcoming fight with the fighting legend, his dual fighting careers, the upcoming still unnamed promotion ... and more. Source

| One thing Ken Shamrock will bring to this fight is foot, ankle and leg locks. This guy had most of his career successes with leg locks. MMA fighters today all know the appropriate defenses which have really made them obsolete . They will go to the ground Ken will slap on the ankle lock from hell, Toney will tap and that will be it. Unless the ground time is 2 seconds or less Shamrock will win.
I of course will only watch this on youtube for free the next day.... or never.

| Ken Shamrock is gonna try and stand with Toney because he's Ken Shamrock and being smart is not one of his traits. He's gonna get all over-emotional and fired up and try to take Toney's head off......then he's gonna get 5 years knocked off his life.
I've never visited a boxing discussion forum before, but I might after this fight, just so I can hear all the boxing fans screaming with glee about how this proves that boxers are better than MMA fighters.....while completely disregarding two things:
1)Toney is already Couture's girlfriend
2)Shamrock hasn't been anything resembling relevant for a long, long time now.

| So as I understand it ... in order to be an undisputed champion in boxing you have to hold four titles... WBA, WBC, IBF, and the WBO...
So like how many undisputed champs are out there, what if you hold only three out of the four... uh
sigh...

| Agree the guy is just devastating.... that's what is so fuked up about boxing. The system makes it so an org can claim to have a champ and it doesn't have to back it up... you can maintain your championship by just not fighting the other orgs champ.
I REALLY like the fact that MMA champs are much clearer with one dominant organization holding all the champions in each weight class.
Even The Paper Emperor really knew that until he beat someone in the top tier he could not claim to be a "real" champ. .... Well maybe not Fedor... he did hold the M1 Wamma HW belt ... right?
Who is the WAMMA champ now? ... heh

| July 8 2010 So What Ever Became of Fedor Emelianenko's WAMMA Belt, Anyway? By Ben Fowlkes MMA Writer --- It's the question that few of us have bothered to ask, probably because even fewer of us bothered to care, but what's the status of Fedor Emelianenko's WAMMA heavyweight title after his submission loss to Fabricio Werdum?
I know, I know. Somehow, what with Brock Lesnar winning a dramatic comeback victory and the heavyweight ranks getting shaken up like a snow globe in the hands of a petulant child over the last few weeks, it doesn't seem all that important.
That said, is Werdum now the WAMMA champ? Did Fedor FedEx him the belt? And if so, will he wear it with the same sense of pride that Fedor did? I did a little asking around in order to find answers to these and other almost relevant questions, and what I discovered was that the fans aren't the only ones who haven't given the issue much thought.
When questioned by Ariel Helwani on "The MMA Hour" before the Strikeforce bout, M-1 Global's Evgeni Kogan defended the WAMMA strap thusly:
"What it means, and what it means for us, is the idea that anyone can fight anyone. ...Eventually everyone is going to fight everyone else. It's going to have to happen. It's inevitable. That's what the WAMMA belt stands for. It stands for the hope for the future that the best people in the world will meet the best people in the world without organizations, without contracts, without all this stuff getting in the way. That's why we hold the WAMMA belt in such importance. ... It stands for an idea. Not only for Fedor but for us."
When Helwani pressed Kogan on whether the belt would be up for grabs when Emelianenko met Werdum, Kogan responded, "Good question. I believe that it would be."
Now, however, it's a different story.
"I was mistaken," Kogan told me via email this week. "The WAMMA belt was not on the line in the June 26 bout."
In other words, Werdum can stop waiting around by the mailbox for that belt to show up.
But what does the future hold for this symbolic title? Will it forever remain Fedor's, no matter how many fights he may lose? Or will the belt that's supposed to stand for openness and purity of competition in MMA eventually get put on the line in an actual fight?

| Yeah.... kinda lol if you wanna consider that belt a real one... its very low on the totem poll though. The Brothers Klitschko hold the meaningful titles. | |

| Toney is down 44 pounds and claims that he is taking mma seriously... I guess the huge fight against randy couture under the ufc banner wasnt the right time to take it serious and now a fiht against a guy who lost 10 out of his last 11 fights is time to get serious..... I cant wait for toney vs kimbo | |

| Didn't Toney say he was taking the Couture fight really seriously and has a good ground game? I think it was right before he went in there looking like a fatter version of Tracey Morgan and got schoolyard-bullied by Couture so badly that he couldn't even figure out how to tap out correctly. | |

| I heard they're gonna make another rule that if Shamrock wins the first round, Toney is allowed one free punch to start the 2nd round. This will be applied to every round thereafter. | |

Seriously though what bigger pussy move could you pull than to dive for a guy's ankle not even 12 seconds into a fight? We all knew Couture was going to win, hell lets face it he was supposed to win, but FFS have some dignity. And before we get into the "he did the smart thing because Toney has no ground game"..... ok fine. He's the smartest chickenshit in the game.

| Right, but my point is that Toney was supposed to be in the gym busting his ass, getting in shape and working his ground game so he- as he said to Dana- won't get embarrassed. Well, that's exactly what he did. He looked beyond amateur once the fight hit the ground. Now again, he's saying he's taking this seriously, working on his ground game, so how the hell am I supposed to believe him? Let's be honest; He has practically zero chance at ever winning a real MMA fight because nobody is just gonna walk up to him and stand there and willingly get punched in the face against a HW boxer. So Toney is gonna pull this shit where he starts his own promotion and makes up his own rules, and then if by some miracle some dipshit is stupid enough to try and engage him in a boxing match (enter Ken Shamrock) and loses to him, then he's gonna run his mouth about how he is really bad-ass at "MMA" and he just proved it by beating.......Ken Shamrock.......in a special rules match..... | |
