Weidman Believes He Has Better Jiu Jitsu Than Anderson Silva

So in a nutshell he's trained in the "Meca of BJJ in New York with the likes of Matt Serra and his brother.... starting three or four year ago" ok

Anderson started training in Brazillian Ju Jitsu ... in Brazil... before he was 10.... has lived all of his life in MMA and got his BJJ Black belt in 2006 from these guys..

Yeah, but it has also long been said that it's pretty easy getting a black belt from the Nog brothers and pretty fucking tough getting one from a Renzo school, so also take that for what it's worth...

It's hard to find an exact number of black belts given out from instructors, but from what I can find, Renzo has given roughly 50 or so. So it's not like Renzo is super stingy with them or anything like that (not like Ceasar, who has only given out like 7 or something like that). The Nogueira's have probably given out more than that, but I would take a black belt from the Nogueiras if I were competing in MMA (as opposed to straight-up jits competiton) rather than one from Renzo, because they have demonstrated that their style works much, much better in MMA competion than Renzo's style. Case in point; Dan Henderson has only lost via submission to the Nogs or a Nog bjj black belt (Silva). On top of that, Renzo's biggest submission victory in MMA is probably over Pat Miletich........meh, and his prize student is Ricardo Almeida- not exactly MMA royalty.

And probably most important;


Al Bundy is a black belt under Renzo, and Weidman is a purple belt.
Case closed.

im sure bundy is good, although he is like 79 years old and would break a hip going for a sweep.
in my opinion, silva's jits is not that good. he rarely does anything off his back. the only time being, is when the move is right there and obvious.
and really, it does not matter that much what color the belt is. ive seen orange belts beat brack belts. a lot of brown belts stay at that color for a long time, when they are obviously better than that.

That's generally true nowadays. The belt system is a little outdated, and it's kind of a slave to tradition. Most schools make you wait X amount of years before promoting you to the next belt level, regardless of how much skill you demonstrate or how quickly you pick up on the techniques. So it can be misleading when you have a kid who has only been learning for 3 years and is a blue belt but is an absolute whiz at jiu-jitsu, and then you have this other guy at the same gym who has been there like 15 years and has his black belt but isn't really all that great and pretty much just has his rank based on the amount of time he has put in.
And regarding your point with brown belts;
It's been said as a general rule that going from brown to black is the hardest leap to make. The rest of the promotions are pretty standard, but I've always heard that making the jump to black from brown takes a lot longer, so that's why you see a lot of elite grapplers who are still brown belts.

But regardless, I still say Silva's jiu-jitsu is world class. Silva is not that guy who has been at the gym for 15 years and just got his black belt for the amount of time he has put in. He is a legit black belt, and his resume shows that. I'm sure Weidman is a really good purple belt, but Silva has demonstrated that he can submit anybody on any given night in an MMA fight. I really don't think this comparison is a case of the belts being misleading of the fighters' realistic skills.
