- Firas Zahabi, revealed post-fight that he was battling a bug, but now Le Journal de Montreal has additional comments from the head of Tristar Gym, who revealed St. Pierre tweaked his Achilles tendon toward the end of training camp.
He explains (via Google Translation):
"Fortunately, there were no tears. That said, it was very tense and very painful, but not enough to cancel the fight. Our concern was that the tendon tears during combat. For the moment, we do not know if he aggravated his injury, but it certainly will undergo treatment in the coming weeks for the tendon can heal properly. "
With the combination of sickness and injury, St. Pierre, naturally, found it "incredibly difficult" to compete. The good news is that he did, and even on perhaps his worst day, St. Pierre was skilled enough to convincingly defeat the former Strikeforce 170-pound champion.
Perhaps more important, St. Pierre -- who was sidelined up until relatively recently for about one year because of major knee surgery -- did not exacerbate the Achilles injury to a point where it would require another extended leave or, worst case scenario, another trip to the operating room.
With two post-op wins now in the bag, St. Pierre certainly deserves some much-needed rest and relaxation to get his mind and body right again. And, according to Zahabi, the French-Canadian will likely convalesce for about six months, putting him on a collision course with No. 1 division contender, Johny Hendricks, sometime in fall 2013. http://www.mmamania.com/2013/3/20/4129856/report-georges-st-pierre-injured-achilles-tendon-sick-nick-diaz-ufc-158-montreal-mma Has anyone in the history of MMA ever had as many reasons why they won the way they did...

| Usually it's the other way around...making excuses for losing...but wow, it's at the point where they're now finding reasons why he won in non glorious fashion.

| Yeah... exactly... just stfu already. Everyone and their mom knew GSP was winning by way of decision... some one needs to let these guys know you don't need to make excuses for winning.
But I am also a bit bummed about it since it will likely push the Hendricks fight til winter or even 2014. The article says fall... but I doubt that. With this many injuries occurring how many more fights do you guys think GSP has in him?

| Interim belts are so pointless. So who will Hendricks fight for it? | |

| i hate interim belts also....its not what i want to see but in this case of a guy who "fights" as little as gsp has lateley it may be the solution....and at the same time he may realize its time to step up his game......waht did silva have? was it 2 decisions before dana got pissed at him and steped in?? im really asking, i forget how long silva had his little slump.... | |

| I think the difference between Silva and GSP is Silva was making it BLATANTLY obvious he was light years above his opponents...dancing around, poking at them, not engaging them at all, making 5 round mockeries of fights just to show they couldn't touch him.
At least GSP stays active and busy in his fights...so not sure if Dana would step in in a case like this.

| yeah i totally get the diff between the 2 situations but same point to a degree.....if you can take the fight anywhere you want it to go at any time like gsp is supposed to be able to do but he choses to ride it out to a safe decision w its sort of the same as anderson except his version of laying on you is not letting you touch him standing....same thing was happening just in a diff place with diff style......so i guess i could see dana saying something....not to the degree of being pissed like he was at silva but maybe a lil encouragement

| I just don't get it. It's not like GSP was setting the world on fire with spectacular finishes and then suddenly came out flat for this fight. We don't need to hear the excuses. The fight went almost exactly as everyone expected it to, so why the urgent need for damage control by these guys? Did anyone look at their TV after the 5 rounds were in the books and go "WHAT IN THE BLUE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE?! HOW CAN THIS BE?!?!" | |

| I think it's because GSP himself has been apologizing to fans after a few of his fights saying he's sorry he didn't finish and he's gonna go for the finish blah blah blah...and so as good fans, we're expecting him to hold up that end of the deal...so when he doesn't and just serves us more "oatmeal" he and his camp know not only do the fans deserve a good fight...but they also deserve an explanation as to why they weren't given one. | |

Fantastic.... | |
