The sequel certainly outpaced the original, but the ending was the same: Benson Henderson beat Frankie Edgar via a decision.
Henderson retained the lightweight belt he grasped in February’s bout with Edgar with a majority decision Saturday night (46-49, 48-47, 48-47) in the main event of UFC 150 at Pepsi Center.
Each of the three judges gave the first round to Henderson and the second and fifth rounds to Edgar. The discrepancy in the scoring came in rounds three and four.
TOGETHER AGAIN
You think Henderson and Edgar looked mad before the fight, you should see them in the ring with our UFC 150 action gallery.
“Frankie is tough,” said Henderson, who won the first fight with a unanimous decision. “Everybody knows he’s tough. My hat’s off to him, his team and his coaches.”
The judge’s decision was greeted with jeers inside the arena.
"It's one of those controversial decisions,” UFC president Dana White said. “Let me just say this, I’m not a judge. Benson Henderson won the fight tonight. He retained the title and that’s the end of it. I know there were a lot of people who scored the fight differently.”
“I thought I had it,” Edgar said. “I did think I did enough. I felt I pushed the pace and took the fight right at him, but here we are.”
Edgar barely escaped the first round after Henderson applied the guillotine with 20 seconds left. Henderson also knocked Edgar to the mat with a sweeping kick earlier in the round.
Edgar rebounded in the second as he stunned Henderson with a right hand midway through the round. Henderson fell to the mat as Edgar went in for the submission. It took more than a minute for Henderson to extricate himself.
Neither fighter, however, distinguished themselves to a great degree over the final three rounds.
"I definitely did enough to get my hand raised," Henderson said.
Henderson is slated to fight Nate Diaz, who attended the fight, next.
The co-main event lasted all of a minute, 16 seconds, but lightweights (and former training partners) Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard crammed few rounds of action into that space.
Guillard appeared to have the upper hand early as he floored Cerrone with a left. Cerrone, however, collected himself and eventually through a left kick that stunned Guillard. Cerrone followed it up with a right hand that knocked out Guillard.
“I came in a little aggressive,” Cerrone said.
It was a disappointing weekend all around for Guillard, who failed to make weight on Friday and lost 10-20 percent of his purse as a result.
Jake Shields exited the octagon through a smattering of boos after he outlasted Ed Herman in their middleweight bout that was long on grappling and short on action. Shields earned a unanimous decision in a fight UFC president Dana White called “TERRIBLE” on Twitter.
“To be honest I was getting a little tired in there from the altitude so I had to slow my pace down and I couldn’t fight the way I had planned to,” Shields said. “In hindsight I needed to get here earlier to acclimate but that’s how you learn.”
The first two fights of the main card ended in second-round TKOs as featherweight Max Holloway defeated Justin Lawrence and middleweight Yushin Okami beat Buddy Roberts.
The prelims included the quickest bantamweight fight in UFC (or WEC) history. Erik Perez used a right hand to stun Ken Stone, who crumpled to the ground and was punished with a few more blows to the head before the ref stopped the fight 17 seconds into the contest. continued....
What do you guys think? Did the judges get the decision right?

| I scored it 49-48 for Edgar (rounds 3 & 5 a 10-10). However, it was way too close to actually boo a decision. Judging the fight as a whole (rather than 10 point must by round), I thought it was an easy draw. | |

| edgar won the fight. henderson new it too. you could see him getting broken, his will and energy were gone by the end. to me, his eyes read that he thought he lost after the fight. more i watch frankie, more of a fan i become. he just keeps going. there is absolutely no quitting in him, and more so, he become better as the fight goes on.

| You know, Edgar seems like a nice guy and a hard worker. However, his style is frustrating sometimes. He always seems to fight to the level of competition, and goes to decision 80% of the time. You are going to lose some close decisions when you go to decision so often. Not saying he deserves it, but not going to feel sorry for him either. That fight was in no way lopsided and imo wasn't one sided enough to boo a decision either way.
I really wish Edgar would just drop to featherweight as think he would crush anyone in that weight class, and he wouldn't have to bulk up for fights. He'd only have to cut like 8 pounds to make Feather.

| I thought it was close and was rooting for Henderson ,but thought Edgar won. Near the end it didn't seem like Henderson was doing enough to win. | |

| Watching the post fight presser was kinda funny and sad.
Edgar sitting there listening to Dana saying how he wasn't going to get another shot while saying "Frankie should go to 145 but I'm not telling him to .... but Frankie, I love this kid, should go to 145 ... but that's not my decision... but if Frankie went down...."
And then for Benson.... "Dana who do you think won the fight..?" "Well ... I'm not a judge... I tell these guys all the time 'don't leave it in the hands of the judges.... I'm not a judge... uh... next question..."

| ^^^ So to paraphrase Dana:
"Edgar's not getting another shot, and should drop to FW. But I think he actually won the fight. I also don't make any sense."

| I would respond the same way.
It doesn't make sense to just keep giving a guy a rematch regardless how many times the judges subjectively screw up.
Fighters know they can get screwed over if they do not finish a fight.
Edgar should consider moving to FW.
Dana's opinion on who "should have" won the fight makes no difference. Like he said, he's not a judge.

| True, but it's just funny to say he needs to leave the weight class and then more or less say he won the fight IYO. That's a bit contradictory, isn't it? | |

| frankie need not to move down, unless he wants too. there should be more fighters that fight at their natural weight, none of that cutting 30 lbs. frankie is still good enough to beat the champ so he can stay. Dana is not making much sense, but thats not really an exception lol. maybe he is concerned about frankie or knows that he would bring a lot of moolah in by being dominant at 145. | |

| I think that's at least half right. IMO they are running out of contenders for Jose Aldo, and there aren't a whole lot of fights that they can sell for a title fight right now.
Dana can sell Aldo vs Edgar and he knows it. Still, that's not a very fair reason to relentlessly hound the guy about dropping weight.

| I'm sure Frankie sees this as some sort of demotion. Dana keeps saying "I love this kid" but the love sure isn't showing..... may he needs to buy Frankie a car. | |

| I actually scored the fight 48-47 for edgar, but it was close enough that I don't think you can be pissed over it.
When you fight Frankie's style he can't get overly pissed at close decisions.
