UFC Middleweight Anderson Silva
To the surprise of no one this side of Stockton, Cali, UFC president Dana White vehemently shot down the notion of Nick Diaz, who is currently serving a year-long marijuana suspension and coming off a loss for the interim welterweight title to Carlos Condit, challenging middleweight king Anderson Silva (Pictured) for his crown.
“Nick Diaz makes no sense,” White stated following Thursday’s press conference. “I know that sounds fun, ‘Yeah! Throw Nick Diaz in there!’ If you really look at the thing, Nick Diaz just lost to Condit at 170 [pounds], so that gives him the opportunity to move up to [1]85 and fight the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world?
“In what [expletive] universe does that make sense?”
Well, it doesn’t. However, the fans seemed to love the idea when Diaz’s longtime manager, Cesar Gracie, suggested the tango to the Twitter universe.
In more a feasible superfight, White hinted the organization is eying a blockbuster bout between “The Spider” and welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre. The scrap would undoubtedly mark the biggest fight in mixed martial arts history.
“Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva are both considered, and most people argue, I think finally, especially with the inactivity from GSP, that people now consider Anderson Silva the [best] pound-for-pound,” White said. “But there was an argument there for a long time, and if GSP hadn’t been this inactive, maybe the debate would still be there. But [St-Pierre’s] definitely two or three in the world, depending on who you ask. And if you were really going to make a fight like that, it would make more sense with Georges St-Pierre than it would with Diaz.
“It’s always theoretical. You don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see what happens in the future here, and maybe that is the fight we’re gonna make. I can tell you this, not theoretically, Diaz-Anderson is not going to happen. That’s just ridiculous.”
Earlier today, UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta told the LATimes, “We are very open to the idea of Anderson/GSP. If GSP beats Condit, it’s a fight we would like to make.”
White echoed the same sentiment.
“That’s what we’re thinking,” White added. “But anything can happen. It’s all theoretical right now. source

| Awwww!!!!! Eh, oh well. It would've been a good scrap, but Dana is right; it really doesn't make sense to do it. With that said, quick fucking talking about making GSP vs Silva and just make GSP vs Silva already. For Dana to simply say he's trying to make it happen means dick at this point. I want to see progress, not more empty statements. | |

| Great, so we will have to wait for like 9 months for this to happen. I would have been much more excited about Jones/Silva.

| This fight is so meh to me.
The idea of GSP and Silva fighting sounds awesome, because its the number 1 guy vs the number 2 guy in the world, but does anyone think they are really going to stand and bang with each other?
With GSP's prolific takedown ability and Anderson's shitty takedown defense coupled with his ability to negate GnP while on his back and GSP's already lackluster offense while on top this has the makings of a LnP snoozefest to me.

| I agree that it would be a snoozefest, but not of the LnP variety. I see GSP trying a few TDs, but not being very sucessful after a round or so (ala Sonnen/Silva 2), and then be forced to stand with Silva. But GSP isn't stupid, so he would likely stay the hell away from anything dangerous at all costs. This will mean GSP doing that stupid little double-jab thing and then retreating for 3 and a half rounds and Silva literally dropping his hands to try and get GSP to commit (ala Silva/Okami 2). | |
