Subject: True Beef - Cerrone vs. Nate Diaz [UPDATED] Tue Dec 27, 2011 7:03 pm
Quote :
Donald Cerrone isn't very big on Christmas and definitely not a fan being insulted. After an October run-in with Nate Diaz, it makes for the perfect blizzard of punches, knees and kicks next week at UFC 141. Before UFC 137, there was no history between Cerrone and Diaz, until the younger half of the infamous Diaz brothers pulled a trick from his bag of anger. During the workouts before UFC 137, Diaz was speaking Leonard Garcia, one of Cerrone's teammates at Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque. "Leonard was over there talking with the dude, so I said 'oh, [expletive] I'll go over there.' They were laughing and joking around. I walked over and said 'what's up Nate, I'm 'Cowboy.' He slapped my hand away and called me a punk-ass [expletive]," Cerrone told ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas (NSFW). "He told me to get on. I don't know what his point [was]. I guess he doesn't want to be cordial." Cerrone is slightly volatile and likes to fight. You need some major cojones to start something with him. There was a brief second there something bad was set to go down. "I was getting ready to fight. Then he walked away. He just took off after that. It caught me by surprise," said Cerrone. "Don't know anything about the guy. I think they just wake up pissed off all the time for no reason. It just seems like they're always mad. Whatever he does to get his mind ready for the fight that must be it," said Cerrone. If you think Cerrone is going to let it slide, you're dead wrong. He brought it even stronger during an interview on "Countdown to UFC 141" saying Diaz messed with the wrong guy. "If you want to talk [expletive] to me, you're just gonna enrage me and piss me off," said Cerrone. "So feed my [expletive] flame. That's what I say. Let's go!" At Cerrone's last fight, a dominant win over Denis Siver at UFC 137, he again got to witness the Diaz brothers' madness first hand as Nick ranted and raved about everything under the sun. "I was exploding into laughter on some of the comments. I was waiting for someone to take the mic away from him, like 'that's enough before you completely ruin yourself. That'll be enough out of you.' I was just surprised he kept going on about compensation and no one knew what the [expletive] he was talking about," said Cerrone.
Apparently Donald Cerrone met up with Nate Diaz at a UFC gym that was hosting an open workout during a previous event. This about two months ago, before they were matched up to fight this Fri., Dec. 30 at UFC 141. Being a fan of his style, Cerrone had the idea to introduce himself to Diaz. You know, just a friendly hello and a handshake. But it didn't go down that way.
Here's "Cowboy's" side of it:
"Really the only interaction I've had with Nate is at the open workout prior to this fight. We don't even know we're fighting each other at this point. I walk over to be like, 'hey man, what's going on?' Shake his hand... he slaps my hand away and calls me a punk ass (expletive) and walks off. And I was like, 'what? Alright.'"
Homie don't play that? Seems like an odd thing for Diaz to do, even if he is a tough guy from the mean streets of Stockton, California. His response:
"He shouldn't try to shake my hand. We're not cool like that. He fights in my bracket, man, he's in my weight class. I'm not trying to make something that it ain't, I'm not putting on a front for you, you know. I'll probably be fighting you next, so you go your way, I'll go mine."
Well, that kind of helps explain it. But not really. So, of course, Ariel Helwani got on the case and tracked Nate down to ask him outright what exactly happened and why it went down the way it did. Here's what he said:
"He just tried to be my friend. Tried to come up and say hi, I just walked the other way. I wasn't trying to be a bully or anything. I think he's trying to push me in a bully's direction, making me the bad guy but I just walked the other way. I think he's just making it a little more than what it was."
Indeed, Cerrone has used the slight as definite motivation and fuel for his fire so that he's an even more dangerous fighter come showtime this Friday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Diaz's point, essentially, is that he no longer wants to make friends with folks who fight in the same weight class he does, simply because he's probably going to end up fighting them somewhere down the line.
And why make it even a little awkward?
In fact, in the full video (see it here), Diaz details three separate incidents involving Josh Neer, Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson in which he became friends with all three and immediately after he did so, he got the call to fight them.
Joe Silva's been cramping Nate's style since 2008.
Diaz, of course, finally smartened up and is taking the proactive approach to the fight game. If you're a lightweight, don't try to make buddies with him. Not unless you've already thrown down with him and even then, approach at your own risk.
People get slapped.
The Video is here with Ariel Helwani and Nate Diaz

You seriously pissed off the wrong Cowboy. I think Cerrone is gonna put a hurting on Diaz. I'm expecting Saah-Roh-Naay to win this one.

This part cracked me up. I'm sure a lot of people were thinking the same thing when Nick was on his rant.

I'm a fan of both guys, so it will be bittersweet either way. But I would say I'm pulling for Nate in this one. However, I think Cowboy has more tools that Diaz and will probably pull this one out via UD.

Agree with this. Cerrone has been on a tear lately, he looks like a completely different fighter (in a good way). Moving camps did wonders for him

I don't see any way Nate can win this. He's a good fighter, but the family fighting talent definitley skews toward his brother.

Ever since I heard about that Broke Back Mountain movie Cowboys have always seemed so gay to me. Butt (giggidy) be that as it may I think Cerrone will have some degree of difficulty with submitting Nate and could feed himself up on a plate to him.
As a plate of beef... cake... DAMN YOU BROKE BACK MOUNTAIN....
I will have to watch a 24 hour John Wayne marathon in order to reassert the dominance of the American Duster once again....
"Sorry don't get it done Dude." Heh name that movie for 50 points.

Yeah I just read a little bit about this somewhere else. Apparently- according to Diaz- the intended handshake never happened at all. Cowboy approached, and Diaz walked away. No handshake at all. Possibly a little embelishment on Cowboy's part to fire himself up or sell the fight.
I tend to believe this. While Nick Diaz can be an in-your-face disrespectful type of person, Nate is usually much more collected and respectful. I found it hard to believe from the get-go that he would outright slap a fellow fighters attempted handshake away and call him a punk-ass bitch.
Cowboy's a firey guy, so maybe that's what he saw in his head when Diaz slighted him by walking away from him like that.

Yes. I really do. And it's not just blind Diaz fandom on my part.
It's much easier to believe that Cowboy sort of unintentionally embelished this a little or just got a little fired up talking about it than it is to believe that Diaz jut flat-out punked him and called him a bitch right to his face for no apparent reason.
Like I said, Cowboy's a really intense dude, so I'm sure whatever it was that happened really got under his skin and got his gears turning in his head. Regardless of Diaz's reputation (In reality, it's mostly Nick who is an instigator in similar situations to this, and Nate just gets lumped in with him), he's typically very respectful. He even said in the interview above that he is quick to befriend other fighters and usually gets along with them easily. The video of Nate knocking off Cowboy's hat at the presser was after this BS, so it was probably a direct result, and not a continuation.
Nate did admit that when Cowboy approached, he just up and walked away from him. It is a little disrespectful, but it's not nearly as bad (and much more believable) as slapping away a handshake.
