- No one is placing a bigger bet on the Ultimate Fighting Championship than Fox's Fuel TV.
"It's going to be represented in primetime," said George Greenberg, Fuel's general manager. "You're also going to see it in late night, and you're going to see it on the weekends and key day areas. It will be the wind in our sails for sure."
CAPTIONBy Victor Decolongon, Getty Images UFC content on Fuel next year will add up to 2,000 hours, or about a quarter of the channel's programming, Greenberg said Wednesday during a conference call with reporters. Fuel is one of three Fox properties that will air UFC under a seven-year deal that starts in 2012.
The first appearance of UFC on Fuel will come Friday, when the channel carries a live broadcast of the official weigh-ins for this weekend's Fox debut. On Saturday, Fuel will have a two-hour special leading up to the title fight between heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.
As the smallest of the Fox channels involved, Fuel hopes to get the most significant boost by adding mixed martial arts.
"It's a coming out party for UFC on FOX and it's a coming out party for Fuel doing the UFC, as well," said Eric Shanks, president of Fox Sports. "It's a way to raise awareness for Fuel."
Officials for Fox expect that UFC will raise Fuel's core demographic age from the 12-to-34 range into the 18-to-34 group. Fuel's content will become more aggressive to go along with that.
"The theme has just moved from 'Girls and Boys, Come Out to Play' to 'Enter Sandman,' " said David Hill, chairman of Fox Sports.
Fuel will carry at least 100 hours of live UFC fights, which will generally be preliminary-card bouts similar to the contests that currently stream on Facebook. Also, Fuel will carry related material such as pre-fight shows, UFC's Primetime and Countdown previews, "Best of" compilations and older bouts from the Pride Fighting Championships archive. source | |
