Matt Mitrione steps in to face Big Country at TUF 16 Finale

Just 24 hours after announcing the Shane Carwin blew out his knee and had to withdraw from his Ultimate Fighter Finale headlining bout with Roy Nelson, UFC officials have a new foe in place for Nelson.

The TUF 16 head coach will now square off with a former castmate of his from when he was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter: The Heavyweights, Matt Mitrione.

Carwin and Nelson coached opposite each other during the TUF 16 season, while Nelson and Mitrione were actually on the same Team Rashad Evans during the TUF 10 season.

Nelson (17-7), in his most recent action, is coming off of a victory over Dave Herman at UFC 146. That victory put him above the .500 mark during his UFC tenure, advancing his record to 4-3 in Octagon.

Mitrione (5-1), meanwhile, hasn’t fought in more than a year. His last bout was a loss to Cheick Kongo at UFC 137 in October 2011

Mitrione could put Nelson's lights out... nice.

Mitrione does has a punches chance here but if it goes to the ground Nelson will make short work of him. Plus nelson isnt excatly going to be much if any of an underdog in the stand up department. Both have ko power both have pretty good chins but i think roy's maybe a little stronger and just due to experince i am going with Roy. I see Roy taking him down and subbing him or ground pounds him to a ref stoppage.

I don't like this at all. It's too easy of a match up on paper for Roy. We all know it's a crap shoot when you get down to it with these big guys... but on paper Roy excels in every aspect when compared to Meathead...

Yeah, other than raw strength, Roy has him in every category. Mitrione does hit really hard though. He has that retard strength that a lot of NFL guys have.

Remember when Mitrione actually said that after beating Marcus Davis? I'm amazed somebody didn't make a huge deal out of that. The overly-sensitive protester types were asleep at the wheel on that one! LOL

^agree... and Im a bit surprised they would line up such an easy match(on paper) for him. Seeing how Dana hates the guy... you would think they would have liked to give him the toughest fight possible.

Doesn't surprise me to be honest. We're starting to see fights like this...I mean honestly, look at Griffin vs Phil Davis?? You've got to be kidding me, that's a joke in my opinion.

I think Davis vs Forrest is just a name recognition win for Davis. He needs one or two more of those or a win against a top contender. The UFC knows that too... Thats why I assume they made that match.

Wow, you guys are completely writing Forrest off in this fight? I'm not saying he's going to get the W, but stranger things have happened. If the odds are good enough, I'm going in big on Forrest for sure.
