In the NFL, there’s an unspoken rule that you don’t lose your spot
due to injury. Unfortunately for Dan Henderson (Pictured), that theme
doesn’t hold true in the world of mixed martial arts.
Henderson, who just turned the ripe age of 42 last month, was slated
to challenge reigning light heavyweight king Jon Jones for his crown at UFC 151 until a knee injury forced him to bow out.
The former Strikeforce champ would not require surgery to repair the
torn MCL in his knee, but would need extensive rehab that would have him
riding the pine until at least December.
After Hendo exited stage left, Chael Sonnen, who hasn’t fought in the
205-pound division since 2005, offered to step in to battle Jones.
However, Jones declined the last-second scrap which ultimately forced
Zuffa to cancel their first event since purchasing the UFC in 2001.
Uncle Chael immediately revved up his comedy act and roasted “Bones”
around ever turn. On Monday, the UFC unexpectedly announced Sonnen would
coach opposite Jones on the upcoming season of “The Ultimate Fighter,”
with the recent rivals battling for the belt on April 27th – much to the
dismay of Henderson.
“I guess I should just quit training to win fights and to be exciting
for the fans and just go to s*** talking school. @danawhite” Henderson tweeted Tuesday morning.
