In a surprising twist, Frank Mir (Pictured) has volunteered to temporarily transition to Strikeforce to face Daniel Cormier in the final heavyweight bout in the promotion’s history.

“There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense,” UFC president Dana White told USAToday. “The reality is, Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He just won the grand prix and beat Josh Barnett.

“He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy.”

Last December, Strikeforce decided to eliminate the 265-pound class from its roster. However, broadcast partner Showtime required for the Heavyweight Grand Prix winner to defend his belt once before erasing the division.

Most of Strikeforce’s elite heavies have already been promoted to big brother UFC.

Cormier bumped his professional mixed martial arts record to a perfect 10-0 by cruising to a unanimous decision victory against Barnett in May. He took home this monstrosity for taking the tourney.

White previously professed that if Cormier maintained an unblemished résumé upon his big league transfer, he would be granted an immediate title shot. What better way to solidify his top contender status than by beating a former two-time UFC champion, regardless if it takes place inside of a hexagon instead of the world famous Octagon?

After winning three straight scraps, Mir was violently put down by reigning heavyweight king Junior dos Santos at UFC 146.

Holy shit! What do you guys think about that match up and the move to SF for 1 fight?

It's win win for the UFC. Frank gets to keep fighting, does favor for Dana... helps Zuffa with Strikeforce. If he wins Cormier is on a more Dana friendly leash.... if he loses... well it was only a one fight contract and he can come back to the UFC for a couple more.

I think Mir can beat Cormier and that is a win which looks good for White the UFC and Mir.

Its cool of Mir to do this, though he's probably gonna get worked. But I don't think that matters.
This is indeed a win-win, regardless of the outcome. Both guys will be tested, and both guys will end up in good UFC graces.

It's a 10X better option than any other opponent in Strikeforce.

I'm really excited for this fight Mir can almost always bring it and Cormier has impressed me with what I've seen.
