- UFC welterweight Brian Ebersole will attempt to win two fights in less than a month, an almost unheard of feat these days. With the memory of defeating TJ Waldburger in a three round unanimous decision at UFC on FX June 22, Ebersole has agreed to step in on very short notice to fight James Head next weekend at UFC 149.
Despite rearranging his plans and scrambling to put together the unexpected training camp, he still had a minute to chat with us about the sudden fight. He sustained very minimal damage against Waldburger and accepted the UFC’s offer less than 24 hours after Joe Silva contacted him.
“I am still fit from the last fight,” he assured us. “I wasn’t too banged up from TJ in New Jersey—a few bumps, but no bruises.” As for needing any extended time to recover, he immediately debunked those thoughts. “I’m as healthy going into this fight as I was going into UFC on FX 4, so why not?” Still undefeated in the UFC, it’s partially his “why not?” attitude that makes Ebersole such a fan-favorite.
And along with his fan friendly approach—oh, by the way—he can fight too. With his 4th straight win inside the octagon against Waldburger, he joined very select company. Only champion Georges St-Pierre (9 straight wins), interim champion Carlos Condit (4) and top contender Johny Hendricks (4) have winning streaks as long as Ebersole’s in the welterweight division.
Win number five is the next step and Ebersole can’t help but think about what a 5th straight would mean. “It’ll make me a respected contender in the welterweight and/or lightweight divisions,” he said, “depending on where my body settles in after a good few months of strict dieting and training.”
Of course he is referring to his plans to drop to 155 in the near future—plans that were at least temporarily set aside to take the fight with Head. Some people consider it a slight risk—switching weight classes after running off a nice winning streak—but one he’s completely willing to roll the dice for. His ultimate goal is to earn a title shot. The question remains, which route will be quicker? “I’ll be running that experiment, believe me,” he said. “We’ll all see the end result, so stay tuned!” source | |

| Well, he is kind of exciting. Although he's only finished one guy and barely eeked out a split decision over Claude Patrick. He's still fought nobody close to the top 10 in the division.
I guess it's how you define title mix?
3 more wins (2 against top 10 guys in the division), then sure. Don't think James Head fits the bill. However, I define "title mix" to mean he is one or two fights away from the title. ie... Munoz is in the title mix in the MW division.
I think he needs to get through a few of these guys (just off the top of my head) before he is in serious title shot conversations:
Carlos Condit Johny Hendricks Marten Kampman Jake Ellenberger BJ Penn Rory MacDonald Josh Koscheck Jon Fitch Demian Maia Diego Sanchez Dong Hyun Kim Mike Swick John Hathaway Rick Story Thiago Alves Yoshihiro Akiyama Dan Hardy Matt Brown
