WTF? So it's not legal to engage in a regulated physical combat competion with rules sanctioned by the state athletic commission, but it's OK to look at child pornography online....as long as you don't download it.

I think that's taken a bit out of context.
The reasoning for rewriting the law on child pornography is to give more protection to people watching porn of say 15 or 16 year olds when they think they are on an adult porn site. Is everyone on here 100% positive that they have never seen a minor in a porn video they are watching? Wouldn't it suck if all of a sudden the cops showed up at your door and dragged your ass away for doing nothing you thought was illegal?

It is still very illegal to have child porn saved on your computer or to share it online. Obviously still super illegal to produce it.

The timing of these events is nothing more than happenstance. It's not like anyone was really thinking that child porn is ok while MMA is the devil's work.

Well New York is certainly going down the "What the Fuck" path in law enforcement. Just take the "Stop and Frisk" Law Any law abiding citizen going about their lawful business walking down the street in New York can now be stopped at anytime by the police and frisked.

Sure fine put a finite number on accidental views... whatever.... but a pervert is a pervert ... its easy to find them..... jail the addicted child porn viewers and execute the scumbags who film, process, sell, and post this poison. The problem is in the details.

The case in question mentioned above seems to be exonerating the potentially guilty party based on a technicality, while MMA is being outright villainized based on a mass perception of barbarianism.

The priorities of NY lawmakers seem to be wildy misplaced. It's a case of blatant misconception of the sport of MMA, and at the same time, a case of overly sensitive detail-friendly bias in favor of perverts.
It's just an ugly, ugly fault in the system.

You also have to understand that these issues have nothing to do with eachother. It's not like they are part of the same bill that says pervertion is ok buy MMA is the devil. They don't even involve the same parties listening to testimony and/or voting on the issue. One is just interpretation of an existing law and the other is an entirely new law. Most things don't make sense in politics.

They have a divorce rate of 60%, yet it somehow is immoral for 2 gays to get married since it takes away from the sanctity of marriage. Yeah I know the two issues are completely seperate from each other. That was kind of my point. When you put the two side-by-side like this, it's makes it that much more blatantly ridiculous. It's just disgusting to me that a guy can go online and beat off to naked 6 year olds all he wants and nobody is gonna stop him, but if that same guy were to try and compete in MMA, then the law would step in and tell him he's not allowed, because he would then be comitting a crime. I agree, though. There's fucked up laws and interpretations no matter where you go, so I can't escape it I suppose. It's like they say, "If you don't like the laws here, then you can leave". Eh, I'm too lazy to leave, so I guess I'll just have to be content to bitch about it until it changes.

Again, I agree completely that this guy is an asshole, however not the intent of the law which was not well written. The court's job is to translate the letter of the law (which unfortunately left a gray line between "saved files" and "cached" files and/or saved cookies).
The intent of "non-saved" files not being criminal is to give protection to innocent people who may unknowingly view child porn. In other words, some asshole friend sends you a link and says "click on this for some nice yammers" and when you click on it, turns out to be a nude 8 year old boy. You immediately shut it down. Pretty sure anyone would agree that you are not a criminal even though you just viewed child porn.

It's a loophole in the law and no doubt it will be revised next legislative session. My only point is that no legislator/judge was really thinking that child porn is ok but mma is bad.

Just to clarify, I know we're not debating if child porn is OK. I know you're not condoning it in any way. I just wanted to put that out there.

Yes, it's a loophole situation and an obvious flaw in a well-intended law, but that's what bothers me about it. Something like this can slip through the cracks, but it seems that MMA is being outright shunned with no effort to understand the fine details or listen to explanations of what it is about. It's a case of handling two situations differently based on agendas, IMO (there's a word for that, but I can't think of it right now). The child porn scenario is a case of going over the law with a fine-tooth comb to clear an obvious offender of charges, while the MMA scenario is a case of an emphatic "no" with zero intent or effort to investigate.

It's obviously special interest in the case of MMA. John McCain was adamantly against it in the early 90's and as most of us probably remember, he is the guy who coined the phrase "human cockfighting". Oh that Senator/Savior John McCain, he cares about We the People, he wants us to be safe and snug in our beds at night. In completely unrelated news: His wife is heiress to a 100mil+ beer distribution empire that has contract deals with all of the big boxing promoters. So if boxing goes, he stands to take a serious ding in his own net worth. Nothing to see here, move along folks. New York obviously has a fairly long history of secret handshakes and back alley BS, someone probably stands to lose a good amount of money if MMA is legalized. The big boxing promoters are probably shelling out fuckloads of $$ to campaigns of certain members of city councils and state reps to keep MSG an historic boxing icon. Labor unions are probably shelling out fuckloads of $$ to campaigns of city council members and state reps to keep the UFC from mucking up their labor force. Can't have non-union personnel working an event, can we. Meanwhile, fans of MMA in NY are shelling out fuckloads of $$ in PA, MA and NJ.

We all know what's going on here. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, depending on how you look at it), the situation gets extremely spotlighted when you compare it to the kiddy-porn situation. It just feels really, really bad to be a New Yorker when this kind of obvious bias comes to light.

Yeah I live upstate. Any New Yorker can attest to the fact that Upstate NY and Downstate (basicly North of Albany and South of Albany) are more or less two different states. Upstate is more rural and way less intense, while Downstate is go-go-go and all about getting ahead by any means necessary. Unfortunately, nobody outside of the state seems to grasp that concept, so when ass-backwards, shady shit like this happens, we all look bad.

For that reason, it annoys me that there are patches of Upstate that are basicly becoming wannabe Downstate. If I wanted to live in NYC, I would move there. I don't want it coming to me.
