- Although the UFC’s seven-year deal with Fox is still in its infancy, the effects of the deal are beginning to trickle through the MMA world.
The MMA Corner has learned from sources close to the situation that the latest impact is that guns and ammunition sponsors, such as The Gun Store and Ammotogo.com, have been banned from events that take place on the Fox family of networks.
The Gun Store, based in Las Vegas, has sponsored numerous fighters in recent years, from heavyweight Shane Carwin to lightweight Spencer Fisher. The location has also hosted prominent fighters such as light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (pictured), UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and MMA legend Wanderlei Silva.
Fighters competing at events that air on Fox, FX or Fuel TV will have to find other sponsors for their bouts.
The first such event takes place this Friday, Jan. 20, in Nashville, Tenn., marking the inaugural event on the FX network (although the UFC 142 prelims aired on the network on Jan. 14). The promotion then makes its second appearance on the Fox network the following weekend in Chicago.
After further examination of the aforementioned UFC 142 preliminary bouts, guns and ammunition sponsors were noticeably absent from both fighter banners and shorts.
At this point in time the ban does not appear to affect pay-per-view main card fighters, but any fighters taking part in Fox-broadcast preliminary card fights will be impacted as they shift from Facebook to Fuel TV in 2012.
*UPDATE* – The MMA Corner has learned that the ban includes guns, knives, ammunition, and hunting. It will go into effect on Jan. 23. Source Interesting. It does seem to be the right thing to do if the end goal is to mainstream the sport and make it more family friendly.

| i would dis agree......"family friendly" is nonsense.....i tend to say it all depends where you grow up.....for instance in rural areas hunting is a family activity and wright of passage for many younger kids. I think this is way more political under the surface than it appears.....i dont want to go full blown conspiracy on this one but as the adaa is in affect and our rights are being stripped from us as americans, fox which is a major media source is at the forefront of advertising and marketing for the conglomerates that are stripping us......watch your back 2nd amendment! | |

| So replace "family friendly" with "less controversial". Personal feelings aside, gun control is a hotly debated topic. If you're trying to get more people to watch your programming then you want to make it as un-offending as possible. | |

| i understand that point.....but its fighting......if they were concerned about the viewers being offended maybe strike up a deal with the disney channel.....censorship is going way way to far especially considering is a combat sport and at times not for the feint at heart.....is someone going to be more offended at a patch on someones shorts that reads the gun store or at a newly fashioned vagina on someones forehead?
just my humble opinion.....doesnt mean im right

| I don't like any kind of censorship... especially for things that are completely legal like owning a firearm or hunting. Just stupid.
One of the many problems with making something mainstream. Pretty sure alcohol takes about 1000 times more lives than firearms. Might as well ban bud light as well.

| Really? I'm no hunter but I certainly defend peoples rights to own legal weapons and ammunition. From hunting gophers with Brock's .50 cal to some scared mom shooting an intruder in Texas. If it's legal then let the market decide. These guys are making an honest living and Fox wants to make some poorly thought out PC ban on a legal, activity by cutting into a poor fighters take home pay? Fuck them!
WTF? Fox has let Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, Chris Wallace, O'Rielly and the rest of them Teabagging nut bars from the far Right spew their lies and poison for years and now when it comes time to defend the "Right to Bear arms" and "Freedom of speech" they shut the door?
Fucking hypocrites!
Now we know why Brock truly retired.

| Guys, before you go thinking I'm some bleeding heart liberal keep in mind agreeing with this decision has nothing to do with how I feel about gun control. If you have a business that you're trying to bring to the masses, you don't have controversial subject matter on your guys' shorts. That's a fight (no pun intended) that you don't worry about until you have the right amount of exposure. | |

| Really DEP? How are guns and ammo controversial?
Shooting your neighbors kittens, blasting out the neighborhood cops tires, picking off your local libraries door knobs ... sure these things are all unlawful and perhaps controversial.... but really no one wants to advertise these activities on their shorts to feed their families.
Guns and ammo are not controversial and the more you folks in the US let this shit slide the closer you will get to government intervention in gun control.
Remember you folks kicked out the legal government in your country with the use of guns. Shooting the odd Brit was ok then.... heh hardly controversial.

| Half of the Country wants stronger gun control, the other half wants more lenient gun control. That's controversial. | |

| I don't know what the actual ratio is but I don't think it's divided down the middle. For the record I think there's an extremely negative stigma attached to guns by the media, Fox included, that perpetuates the "controversy" so I can kinda see where they're coming from. Doesn't mean I agree with it. Rarely do we hear a story of a foiled home invasion or robbery because some innocent bystander was armed, but they happen all the time. With rights come responsibility, and a lack thereof is what's threatening our rights every day. Soon enough we'll all be wearing gray sweatshirts, sweatpants and helmets, and we'll be speaking a mishmash of every language on earth while celebrating Hannukwanzmas. Nobody will ever be offended again and nobody will so much as skin a knee. Imagine how happy everyone will be then. Yay Ameritopia... | |
